Diane Borsato: First-ever survey now open at York University

Behind the sky-sad wall at the entrance to the Art Gallery of York University, a gentle whir emanates, contents the big, bright space with an out-of-place sound. Slip inside, and most days you’ll see Dylan, a showbiz undergrad for whom the gallery has became an unlikely idyllic refuge.

Except now, of course, as his legs interrogate the pedals of a stationary bike, which powers the lights and computer in Dylan’s on-campus domestic-away-from-home. Filling the gallery is a curving cedar penthouse, fitted with an array of homey delights: Seedling tomatoes, a kind of teas, well-thumbed field guides to mushrooms and edible weeds.

“Who needs the library?” Dylan says, mopping a midget sweat. “I like my alone time, and this is the perfect place.”

Whether he knows it or not, Dylan’s alone metre makes him a co-conspirator in the gentle, social artworks of Diane Borsato. The glossary of terms for Borsato’s way of working is ever-expanding: Harry intervention, performance art, social practice, relational aesthetics. Merely put, Borsato’s medium is shared knowledge and experience, and the revelations that can be born in underhanded ruptures of the everyday.

Take Dylan. Borsato built Walking Studio last year in the Ontario countryside as a competitors house and open proposition for socially-minded artists to do as they over the moon. In the AGYU, the invitation still stands, and Dylan is as welcome as anyone.

Broad definitions, of art in nice, are necessary to engage with Borsato’s art practice (she’s lecturing about beekeeping on Saturday, in Italian, at Art Metropole, the fruits of her efforts to learn a tongue and skill all at once). Her artwork is being celebrated in her first-ever survey exhibition at the AGYU until June. “Shown” isn’t perfectly the right word for her beguiling suite of subtle gestures: For the career decade, Borsato has been busy crafting a solid career built from ephemeral moments.
