The Yellowknife kite-skiing mistress finished a solo kite-skiing expedition from Lutsel K'e to Yellowknife last week, covering 310 km in three days and finishing only before the weather turned sour.
"I got pretty lucky because when I got back on Friday it was starting to downpour and by Saturday, everything was just slush," Légère said.
If he'd been caught by the warm seedy, Légère said he could have been stuck for days but as it was, near-perfect conditions had him in Yellowknife a full seven days vanguard of schedule.
"Depending on the lines that you take, I had measured 287 km. I did it in 310 km. When you kite, you can't go in a composed line. It's like sailing, you have to tack back and forth depending on the wind charge instructions. But for me, the wind was at my back pretty much the whole time. I had perfect wind, perfect snow conditions. Everything was like a reverie," he said.
The trip was Légère's third kite-skiing expedition and his second solo wager. Something about carving alone across Great Slave's frozen expanse is irresistible to him, he said.
"I don't be sure. There's just something about going on the lake and being fully independent. When you're at the mercy of the wind, there's something liberating about it. There's no clap, and it's very peaceful. It's just you and the wind," Légère said.
Expeditions of any sort can be dangerous if you are at sixes, especially in the North. Légère had planned on taking 10 days for his trek, and brim-full food for 14 just to be safe. That meant that he was towing more than 150 lbs of materials carried on two sleds lashed together and covered with a tarp. That in itself was an added hot water.
"It's potentially dangerous if you don't control your kite properly. If you go too close to shore or to the cliffs, there are all types of wind effects that can be risky. You can get in a spot where there's no wind at all, or a spot where there are lots of gusts," Légère explained.
"You're pulling overlapped
