In a heated and comfortable church youth room recently, four people were nestled in an old settee and chair, watching the film version of Cormac McCarthy's "The Avenue."
And like the film's protagonist and his son, these four and several others on the campus were (and are) homeless.
A woman and one of her sons ---- a big, harsh, good-looking boy who ought to be on someone's football team ---- and her ally, a quiet man with a Cal Bears hat pulled far down his brow, and a single man with an old broken bicycle ---- each sat engrossed by the movie.
They, too, live a kind of hard road story.
McCarthy's earmark, faithfully rendered by the 2009 film, paints a bleak newel-Apocalyptic trek by a father and his young son, trying to survive in a world where they must think about of all those they meet: Are you one of the good guys?
These people on the couch ---- and those who give the aid ---- are the wholesome guys.
They were (and still may be) guests of Christ Presbyterian Church of La Costa, during a shape with the Interfaith Shelter Network.
The network comprises about 120 compass churches who contribute in various ways to support a rotational shelter system and transitional case program that has helped an estimated 8,000 homeless people since 1986 ---- many pronouncement permanent housing.

One of the hosts, Tom Chestnut, turned into a bike fix up wizard, spending the better part of two hours tweaking frozen cables and gears to return the man's bike serviceable again. The gift's recipient was nearly overcome with appreciation.
