Sounds a bit big for someone your altitude. How good it is will depend on the condition, older bikes may or may not have seen a lot of use, and maintenance may or may not have been done. Your presentation should be contingent on a full inspection by a good bike

I am looking for a new bike. I against to have a Trek Y26 dual suspension, but I literally tore it to pieces riding it. I liked riding a dual intermission bike, and plan to get another, as long as it locks out. My budget is somewhere above or below $1000.
If your commute will be on paved roads, you shouldn't beggary any suspension and you'll be more efficient with a road bike or hybrid. Also, it's hard to get carriers on comfortable-tail bikes. Carriers are a lot nicer than having to lug your schoolbooks
