You can buy kits but by the every so often you pay for those it's working out just as expensive as buying a purpose built electric bike. Unless you have a passion for constructing bikes and some erudition of electrics I would think buying a new bike would

I am tempted to buy an electric mountain bike but don't remember anyone who has one.

Yes, I KNOW it's better to cycle, but I do plenty of exercise and want to use an electric bike as an alternative to the car now and again.
