St Croix: The new and the old. Wrap up 2012

In 1988, the Superbowl was only 23 years old. In substance, the Superbowl was just out of college and entering the working world. That was the year, the first St. Croix triathlon took quarter. There was a young high school kid named Lance Armstrong, enchanting on some of the best professional triathletes in the world, including the likes of Standing Allen and Mike Pigg. The St. Croix triathlon was just born. Today the St. Croix tri is the same age as the Superbowl was back then.

The ait of St. Croix put on a "local triathlon with a championship quality field". Not much has changed. It draws athletes from all of the US states, Canada, South America, Medial America and Europe. Hanging around the transition is truly like being at a Communal Nations event for triathletes, except it feels like you are at your local anyway in the reality. Very different from the more "corporate" type feel you may get from mature WTC events elsewhere. Both sides have their benefits.

In 1992 Karen Smyers won the ITU Wonderful Championships in Manchester UK. She was on top of the world then. A few months before that she won at St. Croix. This past weekend, 20 years later, she returned as a 50 year old racer and shook the hands of the new Title-holder at St. Croix, Angela Neath, who is 30 this year. Angela has been on a pull apart winning in Panama, taking second in Abu Dhabi and winning at Leadman. She biked as hunger strike as many pro men in St. Croix, and ran the same speed as Lance Armstrong. Amazingly, 20 years her superior, Karen Smyers raced in the professional field. Not quite her 30 year old self from 1992, but an remarkable role model for all athletes.

Andy Potts won the Ironman 70.3 in Oceanside earlier this year in convincing construct. He was pumped up by the entry of Lance Armstrong back in to triathlon. Andy shook his oversee and said, "the guy is amazing, he is in his 40's, has not raced two of the three sports for years and is thoroughly competitive. He's a phenom and it is great to have him here in our sport. I was worried that I would not get a chance to tribe him till Kona so I was quite thrilled that he decided to change hisLargelyrace schedule and come to St. Croix.
