I'd be getting the evaluate small, (I'm 5' 3") and it almost feels as though I'm extending to much. Probably because I'm mostly a mountain biker. So how is this bike? I existent in a very hilly area so low gears might be need but I am pretty athletic

You shouldn't intuit stretched out. Try some of the other bike shops and test ride their bikes. Never buy a bike that isn't comfortable. Compact structure designs are made to cover a wider range of riders but isn't for everyone. For hills look for a triple
