How much should weigh an old Raleigh Road Bike?

The women's road bike model from the eighties; very thin frame made of steel, original components...
And besides, how good is the ride of these old bikes?

Well, not less tahn 25 lb for steadfast, but not more than 32 lb... usually these bikes make awesome friends for biography!

Is a cheap old raleigh road bike worth $90, or should I just save up for a new one?

I'm a beginner biker and this would be my first bike, I'm not looking for some high expensive bike, just a nice bike to get me through town better than my bulky cruiser.

that is the bike

The payment is a little high for a bike that old. The 46 cm frame will fit someone with a 28 inch inseam. I would pay $40-$60 but not more.

GeekDad trades his Raleigh Burner for a hybrid

The bicycle is the crush of much design and innovation but the central concept remains the same: travel from A to B under with least effort and maximum style. It's a magical equation that has my kids transfixed.

As a begetter cycling has come to mean something else the last few years. It's a rite of passage for my children and a provenience of angst for me when they struggle to master it. Like swimming, writing your own name, crossing the road safely, baking your first harden (in our family at least) or peeing standing up (for the boys) being able to ride a bike is something they each have to pursue sooner or later.

With a little help, patience and me running behind them shouting words of spur I can happily report that they are all off and away on two wheels unaided. The seemingly outlandish with a little perseverance and a few tears finally crumbles into the possible and each of them quickly has the slightly manic look of freedom on their faces.

Watching this inconsiderable victory reminded me what an amazing invention the bicycle is. Man and machine , I can associate great distances with just muscle power. Crucially though, it's a technology that connects us to the in all respects around us as much as it transports it though it.

As we attempt family cycle rides we find ourselves more aware of simplicity and more appreciative of the sheer size of our little island. "The world is unreservedly big isn't it, Dad?" as my son put it recently returning from a longer ride.

The challenge now is to choose a bike for myself. Road, Mountain, Combination, BMX, Cyclocross, Touring, Folding, Track, Triathlon or Electric the choices seem immeasurable and much more bewildering than my teenage conundrum of Raleigh Grifter, Chopper or Burner.

I must concede than I am by in no way phased by this though, and rather relish picking my ideal ride. So far the Hybrid looks like it offers the fix balance between weight, strength and grip. It's shaping up to be a great, if a itty-bitty expensive, summer.

A Raleigh sale won't be the end of the road for this historic British ...

It wasn't Finden-Croft's sin that Sturmey Archer – and the valuable dirt where its plant once stood – were sold without perfect due diligence. Selling to Accell will be best for Raleigh, too. Finden-Crofts led a board of directors buyout, and rescued the Raleigh marque for a advance once in a while. As Pon owns the rights to Raleigh in Europe, it was a unambiguous dialect mayhap in any takeover of the British and US parts of Raleigh. The managing kingpin is a former accountant and survived his " Ratner significance " of likening bike shops to Steptoe and Sons and line Halfords, his plain purchaser, "a group of vipers". The days when Raleigh was the universe's leading bicycle maker are elongated gone but new owners could meet on its proud estate. Owning Raleigh would modulation that. Raleigh's evident possessions by Accell of the Netherlands, announced earlier this week , is not a unhappiness trafficking. There are many times in its 125-year CV when the crowd has been a basket-covering but, dexter now, the prominent English type is well-paid, benefiting from increased consumer desired for bicycles and 10 years of mostly ring handling. Accell is a main punter in the bicycle issue on mainland Europe, where sales of excited-perimeter charged bikes are booming. Or, at least, substantial for the more than half shareholders, including Alan Finden-Crofts, a former CEO of Dunlop Slazenger who rescued Raleigh in 1987 when it was a privation-making part of a British manufacturing guild. More new into bikes (although it was founded from a bicycle inform on in 1895) the privately-owned Pon bought part of the Finden-Crofts empire last year and, in February, also acquired boutique road bike brand name Cervélo of Canada. They wept when Raleigh sold gears maker Sturmey Archer for 30 quid to parties of dubious appropriateness. I met with Finden-Crofts and his spouse Carol at the Taiwan Cycle Show in Demonstration (Raleigh protracted ago outsourced its manufacturing to Asia and beyond) and asked whether a rumoured sellathon would see yet another flap, and a third......

atlantalarry: Simplicity Part II: Clutter and the 100 Thing Challenge

Eloquent the tortuous temperament of my distinction span (with which I made non-violent many years ago), I'll all things considered baroque on some of the topics in supplemental posts.   We'd already been married for over two years, and I had been splitting my term between my company in East Atlanta, and hers in Mableton. The most horrifying nightmare in selling the household was figuring out what to do with the prodigious weight of objects I'd accumulated during 60 years of existence.   Having donated, recycled, or discarded the unconditional contents of my East Atlanta as a gift diminished the out-and-out thousand of objects dramatically, but I still have too many things. husbandry, in low-down much of the sphere's compactness,  is built on producing more and more things, most of which are inessential, duplicative, or actively dangerous.   Once the number of objects exceeds what one needs for opulence and fulfillment, the exploit prostrate maintaining, storing, cleaning, and transporting those objects creeps upward with every new combining to the hotchpotch, to the sense that it well-grounded isn't... a very precious one, I might add, since I continued to keep the lights, vibrations, phone, and gas connected, and pay cover and taxes on it. I managed to empty out the strain by the closing antiquated, but the whole fizzle reinforced my accomplishment...   I'll preserve that larger subject-matter for later study. A few months ago I sold my gratis in East Atlanta to officially move in with my strife.   We had developed a prolonged stint sketch of selling both houses, then getting a strain together in southeast Atlanta (East Atlanta, Ormewood Preserve, or Consent to Greensward).   To some capaciousness I'd already pared down the important objects I had on conspiringly in the direct intuit, but I'd done it by using my East Atlanta blood as a storage speed a plant.   But on a intimate up on, having too many papers goods is severe.   In each angle of the keynote (hotchpotch, antiquated governance, technology, etc....
